10 Years in Memory of Pier Luigi Porta

EU/ENG - Ten years after his passing, the name and legacy of Pier Luigi Porta (1945–2016) continue to resonate in the memories of those who knew him as a teacher, colleague, and friend.

The figure of the economist Pier Luigi Porta

As a professor of Political Economy and History of Economic Thought, and founder of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Milano-Bicocca, he examined the works of classical economists with great subtlety, contributed to debates on welfare and the economics of happiness, and revitalized the Italian tradition of economia civile. His scholarly work, carried out with passion and generosity, was fueled by meticulous philology and a strong focus on the human dimension; he published in top venues like Cambridge and Oxford, and built scientific communities, such as the European Society for the History of Economic Thought (ESHET), of which he was a founding member. A special mention goes to his editing of the prestigious volume “David Ricardo: Notes on Malthus’s ‘Measure of Value’” (Cambridge University Press, 1992), a continuation of the critical edition of Ricardo’s works initiated by Piero Sraffa, as well as the Italian editions of Ricardo’s writings.

The study day in honor of the economist

A study day to honor his life and reflect on the vocation of the economist through it. (The event poster is pictured below) Porta embodied a vision of economic inquiry that combined the heritage of the classical tradition with a deep concern for the civil and moral dimensions of economic life. On Thursday, January 29, at the Polo Bonfanti in Figline and Incisa Valdarno, the School of Civil Economy dedicated a day of study to remember his figure and to reflect on the profession of the economist. Leonardo Becchetti, Riccardo Scazzieri, Robert Sugden, and Stefano Zamagni presented at the meeting, and the common thread of the shared memories highlighted Porta's ability to embody an approach to economic research that combined the legacy of the classical tradition with attention to the civil and moral dimensions of economic life.
A special award was also given to young economists under 35.
The study day ideally honored the memory of an economist who deserved and deserves to be remembered.
