Today Germany votes. Economic programs in the spotlight

EU/EN - All the programs of the parties competing in these federal elections of February 23 to govern Germany have proposed an economic turnaround after two years of recession. Without exception, the programs of the seven German parties actually capable of overcoming the 5% threshold include measures to relaunch an economic system that remains the most powerful in the European Union. The recipes that are proposed are obviously distant and the coalitions that will be formed after the outcome of this historic round of elections will have to be formed by recomposing programmatic compatibility and affinities depending on the direction to take.

Around 60 million eligible voters are called to the polls, of which around a third are still undecided. The polls have been giving a clear picture for weeks with minimal oscillations for the CDU-CSU, always indicated in a range between 28% and 30%. The far right is given second at 20%, and the SPD third in a range between 15 and 16%. Then the Greens at 12-13%, while the rapidly rising Linke seems to be able to reach 7% if not 8%. The FDP (liberals) and Sahra Wagenknecht's BSW are poised to reach the 5% minimum threshold to enter parliament.

One thing seems certain. Scholz's successor at the helm of Germany will be the leader of the Christian Democrats Friedrich Merz, seventy years old in November, at the helm of the new course of the Christian Democrats, and internal rival of Angela Merkel, charismatic chancellor from 22 November 2025 to 8 December 2021, retired from active politics and only one year older than Merz.

Further to the right of Merkel on the immigration dossier, Merz will have to adapt his programs and ambitions to those of his traveling companions in government that he will find himself more or less forced to choose in the new legislature. Regarding possible coalitions, it will be better understood which are the most realistic only after 6 pm on this election Sunday. Will the Christian Democrats be in coalition with the SPD alone? Or with the SPD and the Greens? Or with the SPD and the liberals of the FDP? These are the main solutions envisaged for governing a country that competes with Japan for the podium of the third world economy, behind only the superpowers United States and China.
