European Commission to Tweak Fiscal Rules to Boost EU Defense Spending

EU/EN - Since the three-day Munich conference in Germany was a security conference, the main topic of discussion was how to end the war in Ukraine. European top diplomats discuss what a plan for Ukraine could look like.

The controversy over the tariffs announced by Trump seemed overshadowed in Munich by the uproar caused by the statements of US Vice president Vance, who came to Germany for the important summit. Meanwhile, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz rejected working with the far right after a divisive speech by US VP Vance on Friday. His implicit support for the right-wing populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party was seen by Scholz as an unprecedented intervention in the domestic politics of an allied country, just over a week before the German elections.

Also in the foreground was the discussion on investments and resources to be deployed for greater strategic autonomy of the European Union. Shaken by the criticisms of US Vice President Vance of EU policies of recent decades, Commission President Von der Leyen did not shy away from the discussion on the need for the EU to independently take care of its own military defense. In this context, Ursula Von der Leyen sensationally opened up to a separation of defense spending from the European Stability Pact.

The aim is to free up and allocate resources to strategies for consolidating military coordination between the armies of EU countries, with a view to a common defense. The announcement confirms that the European executive considers possible the prospect, feared by Trump, of a progressive reduction in the US contribution to NATO in Europe, with a consequent request for greater funding from European allies.
