Dombrovskis has been in Washington for International Monetary Fund and World Bank spring meetings

EU/EN - At the IMF and World Bank meetings, European Commissioner for Economy Valdis Dombrovskis reiterated in Washington the central role of relations between the European Union and the United States, reiterating an aversion to the use of trade tariffs to regulate them.

However, Dombrovskis made it clear that "imposing tariffs against us is not the best way to maintain allies", adding that such measures would damage the US economy more than the European one. The EU, he continued, has already put forward concrete proposals such as eliminating tariffs on industrial goods and is waiting for a response from the United States. "We are ready for dialogue". "We will not give up our most important partnership. In an increasingly conflictual world, we will need each other even more" the Commissioner finally significantly declared, leaving the door open to Washington for future developments in the negotiations.

Dombrovskis said on Friday he had held a 'cordial and candid' meeting with United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and reiterated the EU wanted a mutually agreeable deal regarding U.S. tariffs.

On the domestic demand front, Dombrovskis stressed that the EU strategy aims to reduce critical dependencies by strengthening domestic production and diversifying global partnerships.
