EU says it prefers negotiations, but proposes first tariffs on US imports

EU/EN - The US administration's decision on duties has made it urgent to convene an extraordinary meeting of the European Union Trade Council, which was held on Monday 7 April in Luxembourg. The European response to the American duties (worth around 25 billion euros) to be voted on Wednesday 9 April is divided into two parts. The first for 4.6 billion, frozen by the previous trade dispute, will come into force on 15 April. The second for over 18 billion will be applicable from 15 May.

Maroš Šefčovič, the European Commissioner for Trade, declared at the end of the meeting of Ministers that the European Commission: will work "along three tracks: defending our interests through countermeasures; diversifying our trade through new agreements; preventing harmful trade diversions". The unanimity achieved was underlined as proof, at least in this first phase, of unity. At the same time, Trump has sent two warnings to China, should it insist on confirming the 34% retaliatory tariffs: the first is the increase in tariffs on China by a further 50% and the second is the threat to interrupt the requested talks. The tensions have been compounded by false rumors that have circulated and then denied about a concession to postpone the application of customs tariffs by ninety days. Peter Navarro, a staunch supporter of the tariff plans, has ruled out the possibility of considering the hypothesis of applying 'zero tariffs' between the United States and Europe as requested by Musk, considering the huge and widespread losses on the stock exchanges, after the markets became certain of America's protectionist strategies.
