Every year on 9 May, we celebrate Europe Day

EU/EN - Every year on 9 May, we celebrate Europe Day, which commemorates the signing of the "Schuman Declaration" on 9 May 1950. The declaration was an ambitious plan to secure long-term peace in post-war Europe and is considered the beginning of what is now the EU.

It was the European Economic Community that adopted 9 May as "Europe Day", on the occasion of the summit held in Milan in 1985, in memory of the proposal that Robert Schuman presented on 9 May 1950 for the creation of a European economic nucleus, starting with the pooling of coal and steel reserves, as a first step towards a future federal Europe, considered essential to maintaining peace. In detail, it was Schuman's presentation of the economic cooperation plan, conceived by Jean Monnet and set out in the Schuman Declaration, which marks the beginning of the process of European integration with the aim of a future federal union.
