The EU gave the green light for Bulgaria to adopt the euro on January 1, 2026

EU/EN - The 21st EU country to use the single European currency will be Bulgaria. The final green light came on Wednesday 4 June from the European Commission and accompanied by the positive report of the European Central Bank, published in parallel. Starting from 1 January 2026, Bulgaria can say goodbye to the Lev and join the eurozone. According to the Brussels executive, the four nominal convergence criteria set out in the Treaty have been met, relating to price stability, sound public finances, stable exchange rates and long-term interest rates. National legislation has also been found to be compatible with the requirements of the European Central Bank and the European System of Central Banks. The Commission's assessment.

Five years to reach the eurozone finish line.

The path to reach this historic result lasted five years. Bulgaria had joined the European Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM II) in 2020, the first step towards adopting the euro. The formal request for the convergence assessment, i.e. the final examination, was submitted in February 2025.
European Commission Executive Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis stressed that Sofia's entry into the single currency will bring tangible benefits: "Stable prices, protected savings, increased investment and trade".
The formal decision is to be taken on 8 July by EU finance ministers, but no opposition is expected.

Positive comments from Sofia to Brussels

Bulgarian Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov, who has been leading a coalition with socialists, populists and Turkish minority parties since January 2025 with his EPP-affiliated Gerb party, welcomed Brussels' green light as "An exceptional day".

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde welcomed Bulgaria, the next member of the eurozone, on the sidelines of a press conference in Frankfurt on Thursday 5 June to explain the ECB's latest decision on interest rate cuts.
"The euro is a tangible symbol of European strength and unity", and now Sofia "will have her rightful place in decision-making at the heart of the euro area", stressed Ursula Von der Leyen.
"The Bulgarian economy will become stronger, with more trade with euro area partners, foreign direct investment, access to finance, quality jobs and real incomes", the Commission President finally said in congratulating the result achieved.
