The economic themes of the 10th Regional Forum of the Union for the Mediterranean

EU/ENG - The future of economic cooperation among Mediterranean countries was a key topic of discussion on Friday, November 28, during the ministerial segment of the 10th Regional Forum of the Union for the Mediterranean, which lasted the entire last week of November in Barcelona. The final day was chaired by European Commission Vice-President Kaja Kallas and Ayman Safadi, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Jordan.

The forum took stock of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership, launched, as Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares emphasized, in Barcelona 30 years ago. The partnership is also known as the Barcelona Process, which refers to the common European strategy for the Mediterranean region. The process was initiated by the European Union with, at the time, 15 of its member states and 12 other states from the region during the conference held in Barcelona on November 27 and 28, 1995. Subsequently, following the 2004 enlargement of the EU, Malta and Cyprus, until then only third countries, became part of the process as members of the European Union.

A Renewed Pact and the Economic Profiles of Cooperation
The New Pact for the Mediterranean was initially presented in October by European Commission President von der Leyen, Vice-President Kaja Kallas, and Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Šuica.

The new Pact received the political support of the Union for the Mediterranean, coordinated by Secretary-General Nasser Kamel.

Focusing on the economy, among the many chapters, Kaja Kallas stated that the new Pact serves to boost the region's economies through renewable energy projects, infrastructure development, and cooperation in artificial intelligence and environmental protection. Commissioner Šuica echoed the same sentiment, calling the event "historic" and emphasizing that the Pact represents a partnership based on "shared responsibility."
