Lagarde's hearing before the European Parliament's ECON Committee

EU/EN - ECB President Christine Lagarde spoke on Monday 23 June at a hearing before the European Parliament's Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON), chaired by Aurore Lalucq. In her second “monetary dialogue” of the year with the ECON Commission, Lagarde described 2025 as “marked by deep global economic and geopolitical uncertainty. As we navigate a world increasingly characterised by fragmentation, uncertainty and conflict, Europe must reaffirm its role as a pillar of economic and political stability.” What is needed, according to the president: “deeper European integration – particularly in financial markets and payment systems – is not simply a political aspiration, but a strategic necessity.” Lagarde renewed her call to MEPs to approve a measure that paves the way for the introduction of the digital euro. His expected reasoning on monetary policy was marked by cautious and concrete optimism: "The most appropriate stance of monetary policy. Our interest rate decisions will be based on the inflation outlook, the dynamics of core inflation and the strength of monetary policy transmission. We do not commit ourselves in advance to a particular path of rates".
