EU Council: the economic agenda

EU/ENG - As expected, the issue of tariffs was at the forefront of the economic agenda of the European Council of 26 and 27 June. European leaders met with the knowledge that July 9 could trigger the indirect taxes that the Trump administration would like to apply to European goods entering the US. The study of the dossiers and negotiations are underway, President Von der Leyen assured the leaders gathered.

Merz and Macron want to reach an agreement as soon as possible. The Chancellor appears cautious and pragmatic, while the French President's posture is more assertive. The mooted agreement on reasonable percentages of tariff increases was thus the stone guest in Brussels, in a Council where the 27 have registered significant differences on international policy dossiers, such as that of Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez on Israel and that of Orban and Fico on other sanctions against Russia. Meanwhile, Italy and Denmark have convinced Merz to sit at the table of the 15 countries gathered to raise the issue of migration at the Council, hoping for a severe crackdown on reception in the European Union.
