EU/EN - The February mission to the United States of the European Commissioner for Economy Paolo Gentiloni was carried out in the name of seeking further transatlantic harmony on the open challenges of the economy in 2024. On Thursday 8 Gentiloni met with the US Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen to whom he reported on the need to continue to support Ukraine attacked by Russia, expressing the hope that the parliamentary process of a new US aid package to Kiev will be successful. “We agreed on the need to maintain strong support for Ukraine, in light of Russian aggression: a battle for freedom and for the values that are dear to Europe and the United States,” Gentiloni wrote in a message published on the X platform.
It was then the turn of the chairman of the Federal Reserve Jerome Powell with whom the Commissioner presumably discussed the monetary policy moves that await both the central bank of the United States and, in Frankfurt, the ECB.
Again in the US capital, Gentiloni had a private meeting with experts from the Brokings Institution. The next day, Friday 9 February, the European Commissioner gave a speech at Harvard University in Boston, at the opening of the Harvard European Conference, organized at the Kennedy School and now in its tenth edition. The title of the conference is significant: “2024: A continent at a crossroads”. With particular importance given to the “decisive moment for transatlantic relations” due to the many electoral appointments, in the old and new continent.
ITA - La missione di febbraio negli Stati Uniti del Commissario europeo all'Economia Paolo Gentiloni si è svolta all'insegna della ricerca di ulteriore sintonia transatlantica sulle sfide aperte dell'economia nel 2024. Giovedi 8 Gentiloni ha incontrato la segretaria al Tesoro Usa Janet Yellen alla quale ha riferito delle necessità di continuare a sostenere l'Ucraina aggredita dalla Russia, esprimendo l'auspicio che l'iter parlamentare di un nuovo pacchetto di aiuti statunitensi a Kiev vada a buon fine. “Abbiamo concordato sulla necessità di mantenere forte il sostegno all’Ucraina, alla luce dell’aggressione russa: una battaglia per la libertà e per i valori che sono cari all’Europa e agli Stati Uniti”, ha scritto Gentiloni in un messaggio pubblicato sulla piattaforma X.
E' stata poi la volta del chairman della Federal Reserve Jerome Powell con il quale il Commissario ha presumibilmente discusso delle mosse di politica monetaria che attendono sia la banca centrale degli Stati Uniti che, a Francoforte, la Bce.
Sempre nella capitale statunitense Gentiloni ha avuto un incontro riservato con esperti della Brokings Institution. L'indomani, venerdi 9 febbraio, il Commissario europeo ha tenuto a Boston un intervento alla Harvard University, in apertura della Harvard European Conference, organizzata presso la Kennedy School e giunta alla decima edizione. Significativo il titolo della conferenza: “2024: Un continente al bivio”. Con una particolare rilevanza data al “momento decisivo per le relazioni transatlantiche” a causa dei tanti appuntamenti elettorali, nel vecchio e nuovo continente.
