Mercosur: European Parliament refers trade deal to Court of Justice

EU/ENG - Wednesday, 21 January 2026, the European Parliament narrowly adopted a motion to refer the free trade agreement between the EU and the South American countries of Mercosur (Below is the infographic on data published by agricolae.eu) to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) for review.

This extremely close vote (334 votes to 324, with 11 abstentions) suspends the legislative review of this controversial agreement until the Court issues its ruling in several months. The European Commission, supported by the consensus of Germany and Italy, could provisionally adopt the agreement. France, which had also voted against the agreement in the European Council, remains opposed.
