From the Davos to the Council in Brussels: EU leaders have sought to remain united

EU/ENG - European Union political and business leaders, and economists, have had to face the challenge of managing economic affairs, even in 2026, amidst unstable transatlantic relations, which are constantly in turmoil due to US President Trump's constant pressure on various open geopolitical and trade issues that also concern the EU.

This was demonstrated at the Davos Economic Forum, when Trump arrived in Switzerland in the wake of bellicose declarations of annexation of Greenland and returned to the US with a rethink about his previous "invasion" announcement. The threat of massive US tariffs on goods from European countries, including France and Germany, which resist Trump's demands for annexation of the Arctic Peninsula, also resurfaced in Davos. Evidently, the European leaders' decision to skip any potential bilateral meetings with Trump in Davos reflected the disapproval that the American tycoon's exaggeratedly anti-European tones have aroused in European capitals.

Christine Lagarde, known for her aplomb, also reacted, leaving the dinner organized by the CEO of the powerful BlackRock investment fund early. During the dinner, US Commerce Secretary Lutnick had made remarks bordering on contempt for the European Union, which the ECB President deemed embarrassing.

Held concurrently with the lively WEF meeting in Davos, the extraordinary European Council on Thursday, January 22, confirmed Europe's unity in rejecting further tariffs against individual EU countries that are more reactive to Trump's wavering demands on the Arctic, even retorting that it might even arm the trade "bazooka" against the US.

There's one last week left to close out January, during which further twists and turns are not out of the question.
