Will the French government hold firm or fall in September?

EU/ENG -In France, the Bayrou government is focusing entirely on the approval of the 2026 budget plan, which it hopes will bring the government deficit below 5 percent of GDP. To do so, on the evening of August 25, it announced an extraordinary convocation of the National Assembly on September 8. Bayrou, leader of the centrist Democratic Movement (MoDem) party and a close ally of President Emmanuel Macron, intends to submit his 2026 budget plan to parliamentarians and raise a vote of confidence. The plan includes a €43.8 billion austerity package, including spending cuts and new taxes, aimed at reducing Paris's deficit from 5.8 to 4.6 percentage points of GDP (the European limit is set at 3 percent). Bayrou has decided to preempt the likely upcoming motion of censure. The radical left and environmentalists will not support him. Nor will the far-right National Rally (RN). The Parti Socialiste (PS)'s moves are eagerly awaited, as its 66 elected representatives will be decisive in deciding the fate of the third government since the start of the legislature.
