ECB: rates cut by a quarter point to 2.25%

EU/EN - The ECB cut rates by 25 basis points on Thursday, April 17, for the seventh time since June, and the cost of money therefore fell from 2.50% to 2.25%. The rate on main refinancing operations fell from 2.65% to 2.40% and that on marginal lending from 2.90% to 2.65%. At the end of the governing council, the board of the Eurotower in Frankfurt spoke of more uncertain scenarios if US duties were to be tightened: "Expansion prospects have deteriorated due to growing trade tensions".

Lagarde: "Risks for growth have increased"

President Lagarde stressed that the climate created by the trade war "will lower growth by weakening exports", with a foreseeable impact on investments and consumption and "could lead to a tightening of financial conditions". At the same time, she clarified, "an increase in defense spending would strengthen growth". European chancelleries are hoping that the drop in interest rates will give breath to the production system and support consumption.
