Von der Leyen : no a fondi Ue per muri ai confini

The Commission is opposed to the possibility of EU-funded border walls

EU/ENG - At the press conference on the sidelines of the European Council on October 22, 2021, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed her opposition to the request for access to European funding to build walls at the Union's borders. A similar request had been made on October 10 by 12 member states, coinciding with the possibility of new waves of migration from crisis areas, not least Afghanistan.

"We will not finance barbed wire or walls at the borders of the Union" is the refrain confirmed by Brussels after the Council, strong in the support of the large and influential countries of the western area of the EU that have excluded such a possibility of using European resources, as evidenced by the position of the Draghi government, more interested in the flow of resources combined with an assumption of responsibility by the partners with respect to the distribution of migrants.
