In Germany, Merz government sworn in. Klingbeil at the helm of German finances

EU/EN - Friedrich Merz has been the new chancellor of Germany since May 6. Lars Klingbeil, 47, co-leader of the SPD since 2021, has been appointed vice-chancellor and finance minister. He has an academic background in political science and history. He has 15 years of parliamentary experience, especially in the field of defense. Klingbeil is known for his critical position towards the German "debt brake", which limits the use of public debt, so his appointment represents a significant turning point.

Major challenges

The coalition has agreed on an extraordinary spending plan, which includes a special fund of 500 billion euros for infrastructure and defense. In addition, social measures are planned such as increasing the minimum wage to 15 euros per hour and protecting pensions at 48% of the average salary. The new government is facing unprecedented economic and geopolitical challenges.
