Lagarde: politics must take further steps towards European integration

EU/EN - The President of the European Central Bank Lagarde spoke in Strasbourg during the plenary session of the European Parliament to present the annual budget of the ECB. The president used words of inspiration that struck for the tone of encouragement to act with greater determination for European integration. "In the face of current economic and geopolitical challenges, policy makers must have the courage to take the further steps needed to advance European integration. I count on this Parliament - and the next - to lead the European action needed to strengthen the euro area," said the president.

On the next moves of monetary policy, Lagarde stressed that "the ECB will continue to do its part, within its mandate. Let me reiterate our unwavering commitment to ensuring price stability." On rates, Lagarde made it clear that she wanted to wait for more data before cutting. The central banker's caution reflects what was learned from the minutes of the last meeting of the Board of Directors in Frankfurt, which revealed a fear of reputational damage by risking moves that were not in line with a consolidated trend of falling inflation in the eurozone. Many analysts have a different opinion, having recently noted how the ECB's prolonged monetary tightening could end up eroding the margins of hoped-for growth, which is already not brilliant compared to the United States and China.
