EU Commission: President Von der Leyen is running for a second term

EU/EN - Ursula von der Leyen, at a press conference in Berlin with the president of the CDU Friedrich Merz, announced on Monday 19 February her candidacy for the European elections as Spitzenkandidat for the European People's Party.

The re-candidacy of German politics has the unanimous support of the CDU in Germany. The delegates to the EPP congress in Bucharest on 6-7 March will make the final decision.

“I took office in 2019” and “In these five years, not only has my passion for Europe grown, but also my experience of what this Europe can achieve for its citizens”.

“Five years of office" according to the president "as challenging as they are extraordinary", with the world and Europe having been overwhelmed by the Covid pandemic when she had been in office "for less than a hundred days" and "by joining forces we have managed to avoid a serious economic recession", she underlined. “In the midst of the economic recovery, Russia invaded Ukraine with the largest land war in Europe since 1945,” noting that the EU was two years ago and still stands by Ukraine. “Then Putin tried to bring us to our knees and has always tried to use oil and gas” as a weapon, but Europe has “maintained its position” and “overcome together the largest energy crisis of the last forty years.”

Von der Leyen’s entry into the field is destined to influence, if not influence, the political confrontation between the groups in the European Parliament that will elect its deputies in the run-up to the June elections.

Ursula Von der Leyen has led a Commission that has made the digital and ecological transition the two cornerstones of the European executive’s policy. The choice of institutional continuity in Brussels is the card to play that, barring any surprises, the People’s Party wants, at this point, to assert in the continental political balance. It will be clearer in the coming weeks whether the coalition that supported the executive in the 2019-2024 mandate will be confirmed or not.
