Jackson Hole: Lagarde shows optimism

EU/ENG - The traditional late-August central bankers' symposium was held in Jackson Hole, Washington, D.C.

ECB President Lagarde, speaking at the symposium, sounded generally optimistic, calling for a soft landing for the European economy, supported by a solid labor market. This reasoning did not present any major surprises compared to the previous day's forecasts.

Therefore, although both demand and investment are showing some signs of weakness, the continued upward pressure on inflation leads one to assume that the ECB will keep interest rates unchanged in September. Lagarde's speech in Jackson Hole confirmed this expectation.

The most anticipated speech, that of Fed Chairman Powell, was delivered amid controversy surrounding US President Trump's interest in removing him from office due to his stubbornness in remaining independent in the face of pressure to lower rates. The Federal Reserve Chairman was fully aware of this.

In this context, Powell emphasized the independence of the monetary authority, adopting a cautious tone regarding inflation forecasts in his speech, given the bilateral effects of the Trump administration's new trade policy. Powell thus delivered a dovish speech, with a weak US labor market essentially paving the way for a resumption in September of the rate cuts interrupted in 2025. He noted that, with monetary policy in restrictive territory, "the underlying outlook and the shifting balance of risks may warrant an adjustment in its monetary policy stance."
