Lagarde to EU leaders, 'inflation will fall further'

EU/EN - ECB President Christine Lagarde in her speech at the Euro Summit in Brussels on 21-22 March reassured about the decline in inflation in the euro area. Lagarde attributed the decline to the effectiveness of monetary policy.

As for growth, the central banker expects it to recover during 2024, thanks to the increase in purchasing power.

With inflation falling, the ECB is under pressure to start a cycle of rate cuts considering the recessive impact on economic activity.

A first rate cut would be imminent in June, as the latest meeting of the Governing Council hinted. A new chapter in monetary policy will open after the unprecedented series of increases launched since July 2022 to counteract price growth.

The benchmark deposit rate is at its highest level since October, at 4%.
