The Eurotower's measures continue to be crucial for the euro area's recovery.

EU/ENG - "The recovery is linked to the progress of the Covid-19 pandemic and the vaccination campaign," said ECB President Christine Lagarde in the press conference following the Governing Council meeting on October 28. She added: "The euro area economy continues to grow strongly," even though supply bottlenecks on global markets and rising energy prices are slowing it down.

As for inflation in the eurozone, "it is rising, primarily due to energy prices" and "the recovery in demand," but it is "expected to decline next year." "Our measures continue to be crucial for the euro area's recovery." Lagarde admitted at the press conference that the focus on inflation "has occupied much of our time and much of our debate." "We have reason to believe that inflation will gradually decline next year." Although, she added, "it will take a little longer than we had expected."

Regarding the ECB's pandemic asset purchase program (PEPP), Lagarde explained, "we are not tapering but recalibrating." "At this stage, I think the PEPP will end at the end of March 2022," the ECB president stated.

The conditions for an interest rate hike do not appear to exist "in the near future," the ECB president said. Faced with the observation that markets anticipate a rate liftoff as early as the end of 2022, Lagarde said that "the conditions for a rate hike are unlikely to materialize in the timeframe expected by the markets."
